31. Ghasri Valley: (Max depth 40 metres)
This dive
is located between Forna point and Reqqa point. It is a narrow winding gorge
beyond Ghasri village. It could be done as a shore dive but preferred as a boat
dive. There are stairs on the East side of the creek leading to the shore. Kit
up at the top and walk down the stairs carefully. Entry is a simple walk into
the shallow water. Snorkelling out helps to gain some depth before starting the
dive.
Visibility is usually good but it is not advisable to dive here after a bit of rain, don’t forget this is the outlet of a valley and visibility tends to be very poor for up to a couple of days after the rain stops. The sediment washed down the valley takes a while to deposit.
If by boat anchor at the mouth of the bay to the east side and enter the water here. If a shore dive then snorkel out a bit and the most attractive course is keeping to the wall on the right hand side. Once out of the creek the bottom drops of steeply from around 15 metres to 40+ metres. Once out of the creek make sure that your buoyancy is right because this is a mid-water dive. Keep to the right hand wall and investigate all the cracks and crevices for lobster, scorpion fish, grouper and other large fish. Shoals of smaller fish usually swim nearer the surface. You will also find some caverns but caution has to be taken when entering.
To exit the water you have to backtrack to the same place you have entered.
